Problems with swallows
Swallows are small songbirds with long pointed wings and short, wide bills. They feed while in flight, scooping up flying insects. Several species of swallows have adapted well to human activity. Cliff swallows use the sides of houses and under freeway overpasses for large nesting colonies.

Swallows nesting on house

If you don't want the swallows to nest on the house, hose down the nests daily as they are being built. Do not allow the nest to be completed. Place smooth plastic such as polyethylene or acrylic over the area to keep the nest material from sticking. Once the nest is completed and occupied, it must be left alone until the babies have flown. Swallows are beneficial, eating thousands of insects every day. Swallows are a federally protected species and it is illegal to harm the birds or their nests as soon as there are eggs in the nest.
