California quail

California quail
California quail are found in suburban and wild areas, but their numbers are declining in many areas as human population increases. Because they are ground feeders and nesters, they are vulnerable to predation by house cats. Their diet is mostly seeds and leaves, but they will also eat berries and insects. Baby quail are born covered with downy feathers and able to run around hours after hatching, following their mother around. These tiny (less than the weight of a nickel when born) birds are often brought to the wildlife hospital after being caught by cats.

Baby California quail are always raised in groups so they grow up know they’re quail. Because they can feed themselves from birth, we offer tiny worms and a special seed mix. Keeping them warm is very important—without mom they can easily become chilled. As soon as they can keep themselves warm, they're placed in a large flight aviary where they learn to fly and find natural foods. They're released back into the wild, usually into a larger group (covey) of quail.
