The organization
Lindsay Wildlife Museum, a natural history, environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation center located in Walnut Creek, California, connects people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share. The museum houses a collection of live, native California animals, a hands-on discovery room for children, changing exhibits and a wildlife rehabilitation hospital.

The position
This entry level position requires a self-motivated, flexible and responsible individual capable of assisting the daily operations of the live collection. This includes facility maintenance (cleaning animal enclosures and work areas) and animal care (diet preparation, feeding, enrichment and observation). Occasional work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. This is a physical job - must have a willingness to work with some physical risk while observing proper safety procedures. Substitute keepers must display a professional attitude and appearance and provide quality customer service to coworkers and the public.

Primary responsibilities
  • Assist with daily care and maintenance of the live collection.
  • Assist with daily facility maintenance.
  • Daily upkeep of animal logs.
  • Stock and prepare food.Work with a variety of animals within the guidelines of the department

Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent; college courses or degree in relevant biological field is preferred.
  • Experience working with captive/exotic wildlife is preferred, but not required.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Ability to work well with staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and move a minimum of 100 lbs. Must be in good physical condition - activities include/require lifting, bending, twisting, stooping, carrying and extensive walking.

Hours, Benefits & Compensation
Non-exempt, on call, can include weekends and holidays. The starting hourly wage is $10.89 per hour.
